Announcements:
  • The D. E. Shaw Group Information Session: September 16.

"Headquartered in New York City, The D. E. Shaw group is a highly successful investment and technology development firm with an international reputation and a decidedly different approach to doing business.  We offer a stimulating work environment and colleagues from the strongest technical programs in the world.  Our team includes Putnam Fellows, International Math Olympiad medalists, patent holders, and hundreds of people passionate about CS, EE, physics, and math.  They're not conventional "financial types," but then again, neither are we.

To learn more, come to our information session on September 16 at 6:30 pm in the Longfellow Room at the Charles Hotel.  D. E. Shaw group employees (including Harvard alumni) will be in attendance to talk about their experiences and provide more information on the company.  Refreshments will be provided.
We will also have a table at the Career Forum on September 26 at the Gordon Track and Tennis Center.  Even if you've never previously considered a career in finance, we hope you'll stop by our booth.

Accomplished Harvard students are often just the kind of candidates we are looking for-roughly 10% of employees in our New York headquarters have earned a degree from Harvard.  As such, we would be most interested in speaking with you.

All interested Harvard students are invited to apply for permanent positions and summer internships with our firm.  For more information on current openings (including application deadlines), please log on to eRecruiting (http://fasocs.erecruiting.com/er/security/login.jsp).  For all positions, you may also apply anytime by sending a resume and cover letter to jobs@deshaw.com." • The Mount Holyoke College Physics Department invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level, beginning Fall 2009.

"We seek an experimental physicist with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and to the development of an on-campus research program involving undergraduates. The ideal candidate would have broadly shared interests and experimental needs that overlap with and complement the present faculty in the department, in the fields of condensed matter physics, materials science, or biophysics, especially nanoscale aspects of these fields. The candidate should have the potential for collaborations across disciplines.

Applications, including curriculum vitae, statement of teaching experience with emphasis on approaches to teaching undergraduates, and a research plan involving undergraduates, should be submitted online at http://jobsearch.mtholyoke.edu. We ask that applicants incorporate relevant background experience or proposed strategies for mentoring a diverse student body into their materials. Three letters of recommendation should be submitted separately by email to human-resources@mtholyoke.edu with `Physics’ in the subject line. For further information please contact Prof. Janice Hudgings, jhudging@mtholyoke.edu. Review of applications will begin October 1, and will continue until the position is filled." [posted 9/9/08]
